Clear safety tempered glass is a type of safety glass that is manufactured by heating float glass to near its softening point and then rapidly cooling it with air. This quick cooling process solidifies the exterior of the glass while the interior cools more slowly. As a result, the surface develops compressive stress, and the interior undergoes tensile stress, significantly enhancing the glass's mechanical strength and thermal stability.
Clear safety tempered glass is approximately four to six times stronger than regular glass. In the event of breakage, instead of shattering into dangerous, sharp shards, it fractures into small, square-shaped pieces. Typically, damage occurs along the edges of tempered glass, but strong impacts to the center can also cause it to shatter. Interestingly, if tempered glass is severely damaged, it may not shatter immediately. A seemingly minor event can later trigger the glass to fracture completely.
