Double Glazing Glass

Double glazing insulated glass (IGU) consists of two panes of glass separated by a spacer. Argon or krypton gas is sealed between the two panes, providing enhanced thermal insulation. These gases are denser than air and less likely to allow heat to pass through, significantly improving energy efficiency.

Insulating glass is an effective solution for reducing heat transfer through the glazing. When combined with Low-E coatings and reflective coatings on the second surface, IGUs deliver even better energy conservation and help meet building requirements. Low-E coatings have become increasingly effective at reducing air-to-air heat transfer, making spacer technology the key area for continuous improvements.

Most commercial spacers are made from formed aluminum filled with desiccant to absorb any moisture inside the IG unit, which helps prevent condensation. While aluminum is structurally strong, its high thermal conductivity at the glass-to-spacer contact points can cause temperature differences between the center and edges of the glass. This may lead to condensation and reduce the unit's overall U-value (thermal performance).
